Some people may have certain misconceptions about the use of food coloring.

For example, some people believe that natural pigments are safer than artificially synthesized ones, but this is actually not the case.

Both natural and artificially synthesized pigments pose certain safety concerns during the stages of raw material sourcing, extraction, and processing. Moreover, some natural pigments lack sufficient toxicological data; therefore, it is not necessarily true that natural pigments are safer simply because they are natural.

Food colorings—whether natural or synthetically produced—are safe as long as they are used legally and within the prescribed limits. However, if used in excessive doses or beyond the permitted scope, or if non-food-grade colorings such as Sudan Red are added to food, they could pose health risks.
